Oiling Your Balcony
A well-maintained balcony can be one of the most loved parts of your home. It’s where we enjoy the morning sun, share a glass of wine with friends, or simply unwind after a long day. But to ensure your balcony stays in great condition and remains a pleasure to use, it’s important to maintain it properly.
One of the most effective ways to do this is by oiling the wood. In this guide, we’ll explore the benefits of oiling your balcony and why it is an essential part of long-term maintenance.
How Do You Oil a Balcony?
Oiling a balcony is one of the most effective ways to improve durability and resistance in outdoor wooden areas. Luckily, it isn’t difficult, but it does require some preparation.
First of all, it’s important to thoroughly clean the balcony to remove dirt, old oil residues, and any algae buildup. This is best done using our Rubio Monocoat Exterior Wood Cleaner, which gently but effectively cleans the wood surface. This ensures the oil can properly penetrate the wood structure and provide optimal nourishment and protection.
Once the balcony has been cleaned (and lightly sanded in areas with uneven surfaces), it is important to let the wood dry completely before starting the oiling process.
For balcony treatment, we recommend our outdoor universal oil DuroGrit, which provides effective protection against changing weather conditions.
It is easiest to apply the oil using a wide brush and to work in smaller sections. Let the surface dry for approximately 3 hours. Complete curing is achieved after 3 days (at 20°C / 68°F). After treating a terrace, you should wait at least 3 hours in normal weather conditions before carefully walking on the surface. Wait 3 days before placing furniture back and resuming normal use.
How Often Should You Oil a Balcony?
How often you should oil your balcony depends on the wood type and the weather conditions it is exposed to. As a general rule, we recommend oiling your balcony once a year, typically in spring when the weather is stable and dry.
This ensures the balcony is in good condition to withstand the damaging UV rays from the summer sun. If your balcony is heavily exposed to direct sunlight or rain, it may be necessary to oil more frequently.
Our DuroGrit outdoor oil is the ideal choice for continuous balcony maintenance. Thanks to its environmentally friendly ingredients, UV protection, and advanced bonding technology, only one single coat is required to achieve optimal protection.
Why Is Oiling a Balcony Beneficial?
A wooden balcony is exposed to wind and weather – sun, rain, frost, and sometimes even snow. These elements can quickly wear down the wood and reduce its durability if it isn’t treated correctly.
Oiling creates a protective barrier that prevents moisture from penetrating the wood fibres. This reduces the risk of cracks, splinters, and rot, and significantly increases the lifespan of the wood.
In addition, oil treatment gives the wood a beautiful natural finish, enhancing its colour and grain patterns. Oiling with our DuroGrit not only protects the wood, but also restores and maintains its aesthetic appeal. With a properly oiled balcony, your outdoor space will always look inviting and well cared for.
An Eco-Friendly Solution with Easy Maintenance
Our DuroGrit outdoor oil is produced with environmentally friendly ingredients and is free from harmful chemicals. This means you can protect your balcony while also making a responsible choice for the environment.
By choosing our outdoor oil, you can reduce your environmental impact without compromising on results.
Oiling your balcony also ensures easier maintenance. Once the wood is saturated with oil, it becomes less likely to absorb dirt and moisture. This means an oiled balcony is easier to clean and stays looking beautiful for longer.
