Treating Pine Wood Floors

Treating Pine Wood Floors

Pine wood floors are known for their warm, natural appearance and durability. However, to preserve their beauty and extend their lifespan, they require the right care and maintenance. Treating a pine wood floor is an essential process that protects the surface from wear, dirt, and damage while enhancing its natural aesthetic. In this guide, you can learn more about how to treat pine wood flooring using our effective interior oil, Oil Plus 2C.

Why Treating Pine Wood Floors Is Important

Pine is a softer wood species, which can make it more prone to scratches, dents, and discolouration. For this reason, it is especially important to protect pine flooring with an oil treatment that provides optimal protection and nourishment to the wood.

A good oil treatment can extend the floor’s lifespan and make it more resistant to everyday wear and tear. It can also enhance the wood’s natural grain patterns and colour tones, while making cleaning and maintenance easier.

Preparing Your Pine Floor for Treatment

Before you begin treating a pine floor, proper preparation is essential. Start by removing all dust and dirt from the surface. The floor must be completely clean, as any residue can become trapped under the oil and create uneven patches in the finish.

If the floor has scratches, stains, or old layers of varnish or oil, it needs to be sanded. Use a floor sander to remove the top layer and create a smooth surface. Pay attention to the grit size to avoid sanding more than necessary. After sanding, make sure all dust is removed, as a dust-free surface is crucial for an even result.

Oiling a Pine Wood Floor

Oiling is a popular method for treating pine floors (and pine tables), as it enhances the wood’s natural grain and provides a beautiful finish. Our interior oil, Oil Plus 2C, also makes the floor more resistant to moisture and dirt and ensures long-lasting protection of the wood.

Once the floor is prepared and fully cleaned from dust and other residues, you are ready to apply the oil. Oil Plus 2C is suitable for all wood types and is available in a wide range of colours depending on the finish you prefer. We recommend using a wide brush to apply the oil in an even layer. It can be helpful to work in smaller sections to ensure even coverage and to make it easier to remove excess oil after it has been allowed to react with the wood for 5–10 minutes.

After the oil has been applied to the entire floor, it must be left to dry and cure. Drying typically takes 12–24 hours, after which the floor can be walked on again. Thanks to the special molecular bonding technology in Oil Plus 2C, only one coat is required to achieve a perfect result. This also helps prevent visible overlaps or marks. After 5 days, the floor can be cleaned again with water and soap as usual.

Maintaining an Oiled Pine Floor

Once your pine floor has been oiled, it will have optimal protection and a beautiful finish. The next step is maintenance, so the floor stays both functional and attractive over time.

Regular cleaning is key to keeping the floor free of dust and dirt. We recommend washing the floor using one of our Rubio Monocoat soaps. These soaps are mild and specifically designed for oiled floors, without harsh chemicals that could damage the surface.

From time to time, it may be necessary to refresh the floor to maintain its protection and appearance—depending on how much wear it is exposed to. We also recommend using felt pads under furniture and paying attention to footwear to reduce the risk of scratches.

Regular Maintenance Pays Off

Treating pine wood floors with oil is an effective way to protect and enhance your flooring. Our interior oil Oil Plus 2C highlights the natural beauty of the wood while making the surface more resistant to everyday wear. With the right preparation, oil treatment, and routine maintenance, your pine floor can remain a beautiful part of your home for many years to come.
